Visit with the fam in Iowa

After my trip to Kingsport a few weeks ago, I drove back to Nashville, spent the night and then flew to Kansas City the next morning.  It worked out that my sister, Mallory, was driving up to my parents’ house in Iowa that day, and passing right through Kansas City, so she was able to swing by the airport and pick me up before she drove the rest of the way to Des Moines.

We enjoyed a great week in Iowa, hanging out with Mom and Dad (once Mom got back from a visit to Miami).  Mallory recently got engaged, so we spent some time checking out possible wedding venues, as well as shopping for a wedding dress.  It was nice to get to be there for some of that kind of thing, as I missed out on most of that with my other sister, Emily’s, wedding last year.  We definitely missed having Emily and Brock around that week though!!

While we were in IA, Mal and I took one night to drive down to visit my Grandmother in Hannibal, MO.  It’s about a 4 hour drive each way, but we wanted to get down there for a quick visit to see her, as well as to visit my great, great Aunt Ruth.  It was a full two days, but we were glad we were able to do it!

The last weekend Mal was in town, was also the release weekend for the new movie, The Hunger Games.  Mal and I have both read the books, so we were excited to get to see the movie together.  Mom and Dad decided they wanted in on the action too, so we all went together!

We got to the theater pretty early, so we could get good seats, and entertained ourselves by taking lots of silly pictures.  I love how fun my family is!

After Mallory headed back to school, I spent a few more days in Iowa with my parents.  The afternoon before I left, Dad took me to a local taco truck for lunch.  The tacos were so good and so authentic!  I especially enjoyed the drinks they had as well.  After lunch, we stopped by a local Mexican tienda (little shop) and I couldn’t believe all of the great Mexican products they had there.  When I’m back in Iowa at the end of May I plan to go back and pick up all of the ingredients to make one of my favorite Mexican dishes, chilaquiles, for my family before I return to Canada.

I really enjoyed my time in Iowa.  It was great to slow down and relax a bit while I was there and catch up on some much needed rest.  I’m so blessed to have been able to spend time with some of my family!

I’ve been in Virginia for a little over a week now and will post a few pictures soon.  It’s been great catching up with friends here and getting to share about what God is doing in my life and in the lives of so many in Vancouver!  Every time I share, I get more excited about the months and years ahead of serving in Vancouver.  It’s not always easy, but it is always rewarding and I can’t wait to get back up there!
